Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Tip #2

Sunday, March 21st, 2010

When planning your SEO campaign do NOT assume that you know the phrases that your customers will use. Use Google’s Keyword tool to try out different phrases. Try versions of your search terms with plurals and without. Think about phrases that might be used within your industry but also terms that may be used by those who are not ‘in the club’.

Don’t assume anything. Ascertain FACTS and base your SEO campaign on the facts about what searches your customers and even more importantly YOUR COMPETITORS customers are searching for.

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) Tip #1

Saturday, January 9th, 2010

When  building a website most people concentrate first on how ‘pretty’ the site should look. If you were building a house you would not begin by painting the walls! The same is true with a website. The foundations of a good website are the keywords and phrases that are important to your business. You can then analyse the relationships between these keyphrases and consider the functional aspects of the website to get a balance between building a site which is optimised for the search engines and building a site for your customers.

Supercharge your Google Local Business Listing

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

OK, so you have a listing in Google Local Business but it is not appearing on page 1 of Google. What can you do to change this?

There are many things that you can do. I will share some tips with you here:

1. Ensure that you fill your complete Google Local Business listing in FULL. This means leaving no fields empty. Add images, videos, descriptions, opening times etc. In short, give Google all of the information that they ask for. They are all optional but believe me, more information here helps your standing.

2. Get customer feedback. Don’t just post your own though! Google are not stupid.

3. For the final ultimate supercharging tip you will have to call me to discuss.

How to get on Google (within minutes) and before they even index your site

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

Often you can wait weeks for Google to index your site, but did you know that you can still get listed in Google without using Pay Per Click (PPC)?

By creating a listing for your business in the Google Local Business Centre you can get listed for searches with a geographic context. For example, “Cleaners in Manchester”. You may have seen listing in Google with a map and a list of businesses matching your search. In this example you would see a list of cleaning businesses in the manchester area.  As Google uses the postcode you could appear for a search like “cleaners in Didsbury” whilst you may not appear in the short list for “cleaners in manchester”. Conversely, if your business is not as competitive, for example; “widget manufacturers in Didsbury”, you could find that you appear in the Google Local Business Listings for searches such as “widget manufacturers in Manchester” or even “…. in Lancashire”

And the beauty of this is that your site does not even need to be indexed by Google to appear in the local business listings so you can begin getting traffic to your site weeks before Google slots you into page 15 of the natural search results!
